Don’t Let Your Dreams Be Dreams.

I’ve decided that the next couple of blog posts will be dedicated to the theme of what I’ve learned as a high school graduate. I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on the past 4 years and I definitely can’t contain it all into one post. So, here is the first post to start them off!

I was beyond honoured to have been elected as valedictorian alongside a good friend of mine, Evren Tuncali, for the Chippewa Secondary graduating class of 2015. When we were brainstorming ideas/themes for the speech, we somehow ended up watching the Shia LaBeouf motivation video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuHfVn_cfHU). After laughing for a while, we decided to quote him in the speech as a joke. But as we started to write the more serious parts, we realized the underlying awesomeness of the video; don’t let your dreams be dreams.

I find that the difference between the words “dream” and “goals” a little comical. Obviously, when we think of the word “dream”, we think of imaginations, crazy ideas, and wild thoughts.  Dream is definitely the more exciting of the two. When we think of the word “goal” we usually think of deadlines, achievement, and realistic ideas. It’s comical because in my life to date, I’ve discovered that the words have a lot more in common when used together.

I find it extremely disappointing that “dreams” have become associated with unattainable things.  I love dreaming because it allows for an individual to roam in their imagination, think of cool desires, and overall think up amazing things to make our lives go outside of the box! Dreaming is what expands our horizons and possibilities. Now, if we just leave our dreams in our head, how on earth are we going to make them real? This is where the mentality of “goals” comes into play. By using the creativeness and limitless nature of dreaming then combined with the physical action of planning, and working hard aspects of “goals” … POOF your dreams become reality.

So whether you’re in elementary school, middle school, high school, post-secondary, or out living life never let your dreams just be dreams. Make your dreams into something to accomplish and “just do it.” Go out there and start that business, write that book, buy those plane tickets,  talk to that person you’ve always had a crush on, or apply to that school. Your dreams deserve a chance.
